Oil on canvas, unlined, housed in an ornate carved giltwood frame. Inscription to the reverse reads ‘The “Spanish Flower Girl” ‘ John L Reilly 1888’

After Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (Spanish, 1617-1682) The Flower Girl, the original is in the collection of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, currently on loan to the Rijksmuseum, The Netherlands. Another contemporary version of the picture is held in the National Trust Collection at Attingham Park, Shropshire.

John L Reilly (active 1857-c.1906) is recorded as a portrait and history painter. His work is held in several public galleries and museums across the country. He was obviously regarded as a painter of some ability for he was included as a member of the team of artists assembled by Sir Luke Fildes (1843-1927) to supply numerous portraits of King Edward VII for Embassies and institutions all over the world. Reilly was commissioned to copy the State portrait of the King by Fildes - for the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh.
