A pair of French gold ormolu and lapis lazuli cassolets circa 1880. Decorated with Rams heads and hooves, ornate rope mouldings, fine finials and linked chains with balls.

Not only are these beautiful decorative objects but they were also practical in that they were also used for lighting. Using the beautiful Lapis Lazuli, a semi-precious stone which was favoured for its intense deep blue colour. This stone is often the centrepiece of the finest objects but also in the world of art, Lapis was ground into a fine powder to produce Ultramarine pigment and can be found in oil paintings, particularly I the nineteenth century Lapis Lazuli can be found in Faberge eggs, even in the mask of Tutenkhamun were it was used to decorate the eyebrows.
